2020 was a year that many of us stayed home, which led to many of us deciding to undertake some new (and old) interior home projects. But now, as we settle in to a brand new year, some of that focus may turn to the outside of our homes. That’s why we’re sharing the top exterior home trends for 2021, including changes you can make to take yours to the next level.

Lighter exterior home colors

If you’re looking to bring more calm and peace to your home this year, a lighter home paint color might be the right choice for you. Yes, this includes painting over brick, too! Before you think that might be too plain or boring, consider this: With the right shade of white, you can give your home an entirely new look that’s fresh, natural, and eye-catching. With the right accents (more on that later), you can find the perfect balance of different architecture types, like modern and farmhouse.

Darker home colors

On the opposite side of the spectrum, we’ll see a lot of homeowners gravitate towards much darker home colors, like charcoal gray, dark blue, and black. It’s not only bold, but it’s the perfect twist on a modern take. Another exciting thing about this home trend? Homes that typically go for lighter exterior colors — like farmhouse and carriage houses — are gravitating towards this look, creating a unique take on more traditional homes.

Contrasting garage doors

Whether to choose to paint your home light or dark, there’s one trend that works for both: contrasting garage doors. Because they can take up as much as 40% of your home’s exterior, your garage door should stand out. So if you settle for a lighter-colored home, go for a dark and bold garage door. If you opt for a bolder, darker home color, keep your garage door color bright, clean, and fresh.

Upgraded windows

Because we stayed home more in 2020, we saw higher energy bills. For that reason, many homeowners will swap out their current windows for more energy-efficient ones. As they do, we’ll likely see more stylistic changes to windows too, like:

  • Painted trim (in a contrasting color)
  • Updated shutters
  • Adding more windows
  • Replacing curved windows for more straight, modern windows
  • Garage doors with windows
  • Paneled windows

Porches and pergolas

If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that we should spend more time enjoying the outdoors. But you don’t have to go far! Instead, homeowners will focus on adding or upgrading their own outdoor spaces in 2021. Whether it’s creating a front porch sitting area or adding a pergola to the backyard, the goal is to make the outside of homes just as relaxing and comfortable as the inside.

More texture and accents

In 2021, homeowners will be looking for other ways to elevate their home’s exterior that go beyond a new paint color. That’s why we anticipate seeing a lot more texture and accents added to homes, like:

  • A mix and match of siding options, like brick, vinyl, wood, and stone
  • Textured front doors
  • Wooden beams
  • Wooden gable roofs
  • Textured garage doors
  • Added landscaping
  • Outdoor lighting
